Communications Team

Communication at Landgate School

The Communication Team at Landgate School currently consists of a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist and a Communication Team Assistant.

Communication is relevant to all aspects of the school day, the Communication Team collaborate with teaching staff to ensure that communication skills are embedded in the classroom within all subjects areas across the curriculum.  In addition to this, effective communication strategies are in place for learners at unstructured times e.g. lunchtime and playtime. This universal approach to the development of communication skills benefits all learners.

Those learners with additional identified communication needs, are offered intervention in small groups to specifically target their communication needs, this includes;

Jabadao – a movement/sensory approach to developing early basic communication and social interaction skills,

Interaction group – structured, play based groups aimed at developing attention, listening, turn- taking and basic reciprocal social interaction skills,

Lego Therapy – small group work centred around building a Lego model as a team, aimed at encouraging listening and verbal interaction skills,

Conversation group – activities focused on the awareness and practice of effective conversation skills,

Phonology group – group activities to support learners’ understanding of speech sounds e.g. being able to discriminate and produce targeted speech sounds and combine them together,

Narrative Therapy – structured activities aimed at helping learners to develop the ability to understand and produce spoken narrative.

The communication needs of all learners are assessed and reviewed regularly by the Communication Team throughout the academic year and communication targets are set in collaboration with teaching and support staff.
