Early Years

Hello and welcome to our Early Years Page, I hope you gather as much information you need to know about our early years department.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) we compromise all learning and other experiences which we plan for our learners. Our curriculum is based firmly on the Early Years Foundation Stage, Development Matters, where we focus on learning through continuous provision and play and use the learner’s preferences to help them to develop their individual skills. The development Matters consists on seven areas of learning which are:

The Prime subject areas;

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Communication and Language

And the Specific subject areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding of the world
  • Expressive Arts and Design

At the heart of our planning are the learners individual next steps (targets). we intend to work on these daily using a wide range of interventions. Throughout each day we also continually use alternative communication systems such as signing, symbols, PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), photographs, communication aids and objects of reference to develop each learners communication.

Our Early years class is highly resourced and learners have continuous access to the different resources set up in our different areas of learning in both our indoor and out door classroom,  an example of some of the areas of learning that we can access are as follows:

Maths area

Writing area

Home corner

Reading area

Creative Area

Sand & Water area

Construction & Small world area.

As well as an exciting and engaging learning journey within school we also experience learning outside of school. We attend weekly swimming sessions at Hope Schools Hydro pool, were we gain and build on our confidence in the water and then develop our independent swimming skills. Each term we also attend class trips for enrichment and first hand experiences.

In early years we like to celebrate learners development and achievements with a weekly ‘Star of the Week’ celebration. our star of the week gets to look after our class teddy ‘Star’ over the weekend and record their adventures and activities within his passport. we then like to celebrate this achievement in our weekend news on a Monday morning and share what our star of the week has been up to

I hope this has given you an insight into our Early Years class.
