All learners at College receive a minimum of two hours of ICT per week as part of their timetable. We offer a variety of courses that are chosen individually for each learner. The qualification each learner studies is based around ICT base-lining, aspirational targets and previous attainment achievements.

Each qualification aims to develop learner ICT skill, knowledge and understanding that prepare them for future jobs/further education opportunities within ICT.

Learners have access to three ICT classrooms including one classroom dedicated completely to college learners. Each room includes the latest software, green screen technology and an interactive whiteboard. College Learners also have access to a Media Suite with Apple MAC computers, a radio station, green screen and photography lighting equipment.

Improving Productivity Skills using ICT

Learners explore the purpose of different types of IT/technology. Learners choose an application/software for a routine task. Learners then use the software to programme their own automated routine for a purpose.  

Multimedia Software

Learners follow the design cycle to create their own form of multimedia (Flash animation, Film, website, mobile device application). Each piece of multimedia created is chosen specially by each individual learner.

Presentation Software

Learners use advanced Microsoft Powerpoint tools to create their own interactive image quiz using formatting, animation and embedded links.

Using Email

Learners learn how to communicate safely online using Office 365 Outlook. Learners send, save, retrieve and forward emails that have suitable formatting and contain attachments for a purpose. Learners also explore the dangers of online communication and E-Safety threats that exist with tools on how to protect themselves from spam, junk and phishing emails.

Imaging Software

Learners use Adobe Fireworks, Adobe Photoshop and Serif Design Suite to create and manipulate their own digital art images using filter tools and layering techniques.

Unit 30 – Exploring Digital Photography

Within this unit learners explore different photography equipment, software and digital materials. Learners generate ideas using different sources before coming up with a plan to capture their own images for a purpose. Learners then capture the images using DSLR cameras according to their plan. The quality of the images are then reviewed linked to specific criteria established by the learner themselves.

Unit 31 – Develop and Use Radio Production Skills

Learners get to plan, perform and review their own radio show using the school radio station. The topic is chosen by the learner and tends to be around an area that they are passionate about. Learners explore broadcasting laws and research guidelines that govern presentation style and content.

Unit 32 – Creative Media Production Group Project

Learners work within a team to create a piece of creative media. Learners get to choose the scenario, purpose and audience before sharing responsibilities to create the media. Learners can choose to use the green screens to create movies, make an interactive website using Adobe Dreamweaver/Serif Webplus or work together to create and perform a presentation to an audience.

Unit 33 – Introduction to advertising

Learners explore the difference between digital and print advertising. Research how advertisers use specific strategies to appeal to different audiences before creating their own advertising campaign to launch a new product onto the market.

Unit 37 – Photography Using A Tripod

Learners build on skills and knowledge from Unit 30 to learn how to use a tripod to capture images at different heights. Learners develop an understanding on how to use a spirit level to make sure the camera is level before capturing images also. Learners create a health and safety guide

Unit 38 – Digital Graphics Editing

For this unit learners use Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Fireworks software to edit images to create a montage for a specific theme. Learners use techniques with filtering, layering and image manipulation. Learners complete a learning log of skills developed as a portfolio at the end of the unit. The quality of the editing is then reviewed with improvements made.

Preparing to achieve own job goals

Learners explore what jobs are available across Wigan in the ICT & Media industry, create their own career path before identifying skills and qualities needed to work in this industry.  

Promoting yourself and preparing for a job interview

Learners develop the knowledge and skills needed to search for and apply for job vacancies. Learners prepare themselves for interview by creating a cv and cover letter before evaluating their performance in a mock interview situation.

Disclosing an offence

This unit develops learners understanding of disclosures of convictions. Learners learn the difference between spent and unspent convictions and the impact it has on their employment potential.

Learners develop an interactive powerpoint on a topic of their choice. Learners use different types of media before performing their presentation to a select audience.

Using Word Processing Software

Learners use how to use the different tools on Microsoft Word. Learners create, format and publish a variety of documents including a newsletter, cinema guide and business letter.

Spreadsheet Software

Learners learn how to input data into a spreadsheet, format it and summarise information using a variety of suitable graphs.

Online Basics + Using Email

Learners use Office 365 email to safely communicate online. Learners develop skills in creating, sending, opening, replying, retrieving and forwarding email messages. Learners develop skills in using a variety of online sources to find information before exploring online threats, dangers and how to protect themselves when online.
