DESIGN TECHNOLOGY

Bringing Learning to Life through Design Technology

Design technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject that helps prepare learners to deal with the rapidly changing world around them. Each class has a Design Technology session each week, in which learners are encouraged to draw upon knowledge and skills from other subjects such Mathematics, Science, History, Computing and Art. We encourage learners to become independent, think creatively and use their imagination to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. Learners are provided with opportunities to evaluate, design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. We aim to inspire learners to take risks, be reflective, innovative and resilient.

Effective teaching and learning in Design Technology is through a flexible and personalised approach, catering for all learner’s needs and attainment. At Landgate we encourage learners to study their environment, question the world around them and to think about how and why things work the way they do.

Key skills and knowledge for Design Technology have been mapped across the school to ensure progression for the individual. Learners are fully immersed in developing practical skills through accessing a wide range of materials and tools.

Cooking and Nutrition

The teaching and learning that takes place within Cooking and Nutrition is directed at individuals becoming independent and developing life skills. Learning how to cook, prepare food and store food hygienically is a life skill. Practical and innovative teaching provides learners with opportunities to make a wide range of healthy meals focusing mainly on creating savoury dishes. Learners are also supported in developing their knowledge and understanding of food nutrition, where food comes from and how food is produced so that they can make informed choices about food.
