Speaking and Listening
Speaking and Listening, and communication by whichever methods are most appropriate to the needs of the individual learner are encouraged by the school as a whole as literacy is viewed as a whole school responsibility. Learners are taught and encouraged talk and listen confidently in different contexts, exploring and communicating ideas.
Reading
The teaching of reading and spelling is based on the use of the Sounds Write programme within Literacy classes and a small group approach is developed to ensure learners are working at the correct level. Our aim is to develop independent readers who enjoy a range of literary and non literary texts and we teach learners to use a range of strategies to develop this outcome.
Writing
Learners are taught how to shape and form letters correctly. They are encouraged to communicate through simple words and phrases and are taught grammar and punctuation. Learners are encouraged to write in a range of forms, including descriptive, narrative and nonfiction.
