Bringing Oracy to Life

Why do we focus on Oracy?

To support barriers created as a result of the Covid Pandemic.
High % of our learners, if not all, have a communication and interaction condition, linked to their ASD.
To support standardised testing and accreditation.
So that learners are able to express their needs and wants.
To develop their functionality and life skills beyond school.
To keep learners safe.
To support regulation and readiness to learn.
To develop their social and interaction skills further.
To support for health and well- being.
Effective communication is vital for independent living and success in adulthood.
To support access and progress within our schools academic and personal curriculum.
Some learners require ACC devices/ or other tools for communication.
There is a gap between the ambition of the current National curriculum and how it is enacted in schools.
The national curriculum signals to schools that spoken language is less important than reading and writing.
The national curriculum highlights the intent.
Supports transitions and employability.
Fosters well being and confidence.
Improves academic outcomes, achievement and attainment.
Promotes social equity.

What does Oracy mean to us?

Expressing Ideas: Oracy is about sharing thoughts, feelings, and ideas, whether through spoken words, gestures, or expressions.

Active Listening: It includes paying attention, understanding others, and responding in a way that shows connection and respect.

Collaborating with Others: Oracy supports teamwork, encouraging turn-taking, sharing, and group communication.

Building Thinking Skills: It helps develop reasoning and problem-solving through questioning and explaining.

Adapting Communication: Oracy includes using different ways to communicate based on the needs of the situation, including for pre-verbal learners who use gestures, symbols, or sounds.
